Event Preview

There will be increased pressure on Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea this weekend, as the Blues bid to keep hold of their spot in the Champions League places. They come into this round sitting fourth in the standings, but they hold just a one-point advantage over sixth-place Man City.

Ipswich continue to battle for points at the opposite end of the standings, as they have suffered defeats in five of their last six matches. That poor run of form means that they stand 12 points adrift of safety. A damaging defeat was inflicted in the previous round of fixtures after losing 2-1 against Wolves.

Chelsea have avoided defeat in their last eight home matches against Ipswich in the league since a 3-2 defeat in May 1979. However, Ipswich landed a shock victory in the reverse fixture this season, meaning that they are chasing a first double over the Blues since 1978-79.

Ipswich’s 2-0 win over Chelsea earlier this season means that they could also become the first promoted team to achieve the double over the Blues since 2000-01. However, the Tractor Boys have suffered defeats in four of their six away matches in London this season.

Chelsea’s home record has also remained strong in recent months. The Blues have won their last five at Stamford Bridge, scoring eleven goals over that period, and conceding just twice.
