Match Preview
It hasn’t been the greatest Christmas period for Aston Villa, as Unai Emery’s side has lost ground on the sides at the top of the Premier League standings. The Villa come into their final match of 2023 sitting third, but they will likely need to claim victory this weekend to remain in the Champions League positions. However, a response will be needed from the Villa after throwing away a 2-0 lead to lose at Man United on Boxing Day.
Burnley will also need an improved performance, as the Clarets suffered a 14th defeat of the season in their previous match in the Premier League. That loss means that Burnley have now been beaten on three occasions in their last five fixtures, and it leaves them five points adrift of safety at the half way stage of the 2023-24 season.

Villa landed a 3-1 win at Turf Moor earlier this season, but they haven’t completed the league double over their rivals since the 1925-26 campaign. Burnley boasts an eye-catching record at Villa Park in the Premier League, as they have avoided defeat in each of their last four visits. However, each of the previous three have ended in draws.
Villa’s record in their final home match of a calendar year would also be a concern, as they are winless in their last nine at Villa Park since a 3-0 success against Fulham in 2003. Meanwhile, Burnley have claimed victories in five of their last eight matches to end a calendar year, with their most recent success coming against Stoke City in 2022.

Villa’s excellent home winning run was ended against Sheffield United before Christmas, but we would expect a response from Emery’s side this weekend. Therefore, we find it challenging to overlook Villa bouncing back to winning ways.
