Match Preview

A lot was expected of Aston Villa before the start of the season, as a huge amount of money was invested in the squad to support their chances of finishing in a European place. However, the West Midlands club were brought back down to earth on matchday one, as they suffered a massive 5-1 loss against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

The one bright spark in that defeat was the performance of Moussa Diaby, who scored on his Premier League debut following his summer move from Bayer Leverkusen. However, the Villa face a number of issues coming into this second match of the season, as both Tyrone Mings and Emi Buendia will be out indefinitely with ACL injuries.

Everton would have been hoping for a more comfortable campaign after their top-flight status was nearly taken from them on the final day of last season. However, they weren’t able to make a winning start to the new season, as they suffered a 1-0 loss at Goodison Park against Fulham.

The Toffees dominated long periods of that game, but they once again looked incredibly light in the final third without the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin. It was the second straight campaign in which Everton had started the season with a defeat, meaning that they have now lost on the opening weekend in eight of the previous 12 seasons.

Aston Villa vs Everton Prediction

There are huge concerns surrounding where the goals are going to come from in this Everton side. Villa were impressive at points against Newcastle. Therefore, we would be surprised if they aren’t able to get a first win of the season in front of their home fans on Sunday.
