Match Preview

The pressure is back on Everton at this stage of the season, as the Toffees have been sucked back into the relegation scrap after a disappointing run of results over the festive period. Sean Dyche’s side have lost each of their last three in the competition, meaning that they now sit just a point clear of the bottom three, having played a game more.

Everton were well below the standard required in their last Premier League match, as they were soundly beaten by a 3-0 scoreline by Wolves. The Toffees failed to register a single shot on target in that defeat, and it was the first time since December 2018 that they had conceded at least three goals in back-to-back matches.

It remains a hugely successful season for Aston Villa, as Unai Emery’s side remain in the Champions League spots at this stage of the campaign. The Villa have won three of their last five matches in the competition, and they returned to form with a dramatic late win over Burnley in their previous fixture in the competition before the start of 2024.

Douglas Luiz was the match-winner in that clash, with the Brazilian scoring the crucial winner with just a minute of the 90 remaining. The victory ensured that Villa ended the year having picked up more home wins and home points than any other side in the Premier League in 2023.

Everton vs Aston Villa Prediction

Villa’s record in this fixture could be the trend worth following this weekend. They have won each of their last five against the Toffees, and are unbeaten against their rivals since March 2016.
