Southampton is everyone’s favorite to go down this season and the reasons why were on full display at the weekend. Trailing 1-0 to a first-half Nayef Aguerd headed goal, the Saints never looked like staging a comeback despite West Ham gifting them possession frequently. Southampton’s record since sacking Ralph Hasenhuttl has declined and it remains to be seen whether Ruben Selles will be given the support of the board. Southampton has a run of tough matches this month, with trips to Arsenal and Newcastle coming after this game against Man City.

Despite conceding a 17th-minute opener to Liverpool the reality is that Man City never looked like losing, and the 4-1 scoreline was flattering to the visitors in the end. With Erling Haaland missing through injury, it was left to Julian Alvarez to lead the City line and he did so with aplomb. On any other day, Alvarez would have picked up the Man of the Match award, but his fine performance was eclipsed by that of Jack Grealish. The England winger has come in for some criticism since his move to the Etihad, but he was impervious here. He laid on Alvarez’s opener, scored the fourth himself with a fine finish, and had a hand in everything good that Man City did – even defensively.
