Event Preview

Spain and the Netherlands were involved in one of the most entertaining matches in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday. But, there is nothing to separate the sides following a 2-2 draw in Rotterdam.

Spain took an early lead on the road after Nico Williams fired home inside the opening ten minutes. However, the Dutch turned the game on its head with goals either side of the half time break from Cody Gakpo and Tijani Reijnders.

The Netherlands looked in complete control of the game at that stage, but the fixture was turned on its head after Jorrel Hato was sent off in the final ten minutes. That handed the advantage back to the EURO champions, and they took advantage of the extra-man advantage in the third minute of injury time after Mikel Merino scored a dramatic equalizer.

The draw certainly favors Spain, as they will have home field advantage for the second leg between the sides on Sunday. Spain’s record in the Nations League has also been excellent across recent years, which includes a victory in the tournament in 2023.

However, it could be worth noting that the Netherlands are unbeaten in their last four internationals against Spain, with each of the last two ending in draws. Spain’s most recent win against the Dutch was achieved in the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa, which is their only victory against the Netherlands this millennium.

Spain vs. Netherlands Picks

The Netherlands boast a very respectable record against Spain, having lost just once in the last seven meetings between the nations. That could be a difficult factor to overlook. However, Spain’s excellent form over the last 12 months ensures that they remain a very solid betting angle this weekend.
