Match Preview

The action in Group B rounds off at the Women’s World Cup on Monday, and there will be increased pressure on the host nation. Australia suffered a dramatic 3-2 defeat in their recent outing against Nigeria, which means that only a victory will do in their final Group B match on Monday. The Aussies were stunned on Thursday, as they surrendered a 1-0 lead to suffer a 3-2 loss, with their second goal in the match being netted in the tenth minute of injury time by Alanna Kennedy.

Australia made a host of unwanted records in that match, as they became just the third host nation to concede at least three goals in a match. However, they look set to welcome back Sam Kerr for this deciding match in the group where only a victory will be enough to prolong their participation in the World Cup.

Canada will have their destiny in their own hands on Monday, as they will be aware that a victory will secure their place in the round of 16. However, the reigning Olympic champions will be aware that they will need to improve on their recent performances if they are to go deep in the World Cup this summer. Canada survived a scare in their second match in Group B, as they came back from 1-0 down to beat Ireland.

Their record in the group stage deserves respect, as the North American nation has lost just once in their previous eight matches at this stage of the competition. But, their win over Ireland was just their second over a European nation at the World Cup, and their first since a 1-0 win over Switzerland in 2015.

Canada vs Australia Prediction

This is a huge match for both nations, and there will be pressure on both to register a victory to reach the round of 16. However, there will be greater pressure on Australia, and we could see them rising to the occasion to land a 1-0 win in Melbourne.
