Match Preview

For the first time in the history of the England Women’s National Team, they come into a major tournament with pressure on their shoulders to achieve global success. The Lionesses excelled last summer to win the EUROs, but the World Cup this year will be a much more challenging target, as they will not have home advantage to call upon against some of the world’s best. Sarina Wiegman remains optimistic that her side can go all the way, but England have questions to answer.

They come into the tournament without a number of key players, including captain Leah Williamson. Meanwhile, they haven’t scored a goal in each of their last three internationals, and haven’t won a match in 90 minutes this calendar year. However, there is little doubt that if England are at their best, then they have the quality to go all the way in Australia and New Zealand.

Haiti are the clear underdogs in this group, as they also come up against China and Denmark, who are both ranked inside the world’s top 30. This will be the nation’s first appearance at the World Cup, while they have also never previously achieved qualification for a global international tournament.

Their results this year have been extremely mixed, as they have won four of their six matches. However, they were disappointing in their previous outing, as they were beaten 2-1 by South Korea on July 8. But, they could have the attacking players to pose questions of England, evident from their 4-0 win over Senegal and 5-0 success over Malta this year.

England vs Haiti Prediction

England will need to get off to the best possible start to answer questions surrounding their recent form. But, we could see them making hard work of this Haiti side on matchday one, which means that we will be siding with Haiti (+4) for our selection.
