A close matchup is expected in the second round of matches in Group G on Saturday, as Sweden and Italy will both be chasing a second straight win at the Women’s World Cup. Sweden remain the front-runners to top the group, as they have only exited the World Cup at the group stage in one of their previous eight appearances.
However, they needed to stay calm in their opening match, as they fell behind against South Africa early in the second half. But, that opener appeared to spark Sweden into life, as the European nation scored twice in the final 25 minutes to secure victory. The winning goal was netted in the 90th minute, as Amanda Ilestedt scored a dramatic winner.

Italy currently holds the advantage for the second qualifying spot, as the nation looks to reach the knockout stage for the second straight edition of the tournament. In 2019, they matched their previous best performance at the World Cup, as they reached the quarterfinal stage. Italy eventually secured the win in their opening match against Argentina, with Cristiana Girelli scoring an excellent header with just three minutes remaining.
It was nothing less than Italy deserved, as they had earlier seen two goals ruled out following a VAR intervention. However, Italy has won just three from 23 previous encounters against Sweden, with the Swedes dominating the previous matches, having landed 15 victories.
