Match Preview
The pressure will be on the USWNT as they return to action at the Women’s World Cup this weekend. They may have won the last two editions of the competition, but they looked anything other than world champions in their final two matches in Group E. In fact, they were fortunate to make it through to the round of 16 altogether, as Portugal came within inches of securing the most remarkable win in World Cup history.
However, the USWNT have a chance to rectify their poor performances on Sunday, as they look to book their spot in the quarterfinal stage. But, they will need to be less nervy, and stronger in the final third, as they have scored just four goals in the three matches that they have played to this point.

Sweden was one of the standout nations in the group stage, as they finished top of the standings in Group G. The Swedes scored nine goals, and conceded just once in matches against South Africa, Italy, and Argentina. But, this is a considerable step-up in opposition, as they are yet to take on one of the leading nations at the competition this year.
Still, Sweden’s record at the World Cup deserves respect, as they have reached at least the quarterfinal stage in six of their eight appearances. That includes the previous edition, as they finished third in 2019. But, Sweden has won just eight times in 43 encounters against the USWNT, with the Americans landing 23 wins.
