Match Preview

The pressure will be off the USWNT following a dominant win in the opening round of matches. However, they will be aware that a second straight success would see them secure their passage through to the next round of the competition. The reigning champions were dominant in their opening match at the competition, as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Vietnam.

Despite Alex Morgan missing a penalty, the two-time defending champions broke the deadlock after 14 minutes through Sophia Smith. The young star added a second in the seventh minute of first-half injury time, before Lindsey Horan wrapped up the points with a crucial third with just 13 minutes remaining.

The Netherlands already appear good value to join the USWNT in the next round of the competition, as they landed a 1-0 win over Portugal in their Group E opener. They were professional in that success, with the only goal of the game being scored after just 13 minutes by Stefanie van der Gragt.

Interestingly, this will be a rematch from the 2019 World Cup final, which saw the USA land a 2-0 win. The Dutch have a poor record against the USWNT, as they have gone nine without a win in all competitions since a 3-1 friendly success in April 1996. The U.S. has scored at least twice in each of their nine previous matches against the Netherlands.

USWNT vs Netherlands Prediction

It’s incredibly challenging to overlook the dominant record that the USWNT has in this fixture. For that reason, we expect them to put a marker down with a wide-scoring win against their European rivals on Wednesday evening.
