Match Preview

Australia survived a scare in the group stage, but their World Cup dream remains alive. The Aussies were faced with the prospect of elimination heading into the final day of Group B, but they rose to the occasion to stun the reigning Olympic champions. It was undoubtedly Australia’s best performance at the competition, as they scored twice inside the opening 40 minutes.

Hayley Raso was in inspired form as she netted twice, while Mary Fowler and Stephanie Catley also found the net. Australia’s chances of going deep in the tournament will certainly be enhanced when the knockout round gets underway, as they will welcome back all-team leading scorer Sam Kerr, who was forced to sit out the group stage due to injury.

Denmark also had a nervy wait to ensure their passage through to the next round, as they needed victory on matchday three against Haiti. However, they made a quick start after Pernille Harder scored from the spot inside the opening 25 minutes. A second was added in the tenth minute of injury time by Sanne Nielsen.

Denmark are more than capable of big performances when they are at their best, but they are yet to reach the quarterfinal stage at the Women’s World Cup since 1995. They were also well beaten by Australia in an international friendly last year, and that would be a huge concern coming into this rematch.

Australia vs Denmark Prediction

Australia look like their growing into the competition, and they were excellent against Canada on matchday three. We expect another scintillating performance by the host nation, and we could see them covering the spread to reach the quarterfinals.
